* WE'VE RELEASED A NEW & IMPROVED VERSION OF SYNTORIAL IN THE APP STORE. JUST SEARCH "SYNTORIAL 2" *

Syntorial is a synthesizer training app, that will teach you how to program synth patches by ear. By combining video demonstrations with interactive challenges, you’ll get hands on experience programming patches on a built-in soft synth, and learn everything you need to know to start making your own sounds with ease.

"Syntorial is the most direct route between hearing a sound in your head and knowing how to bring it to life." - Electronic Musician Magazine

"The most comprehensive and fun tool for learning synthesizer programming, hands down." - Keyboard Magazine

“The best training in synth sound-design we’ve come across. A unique and fun way to train your ears in re-creating synth sounds.” - MusicTech Magazine

* Electronic Musician Editor's Choice 2014 *

HIGHLIGHTS

• Interactive Learning: Syntorial doesn’t just show you how synth programming works. It engages you in Interactive Challenges in which you program patches on a built-in synth. You aren’t just learning how to design sound, you are becoming a sound designer.

• For Musicians, Not Physicists: Instead of talking about the science and physics behind synthesizers, Syntorial will show you how each control effects sound, as well as when, why and how you would use them when designing sounds. This is information that you can immediately apply to real-life situations.

• It's All About The Ear: One step at a time, Syntorial trains your ear to recognize how each control shapes and manipulates sound. By the end of the program you’ll be able to take the sounds you hear and re-create them, completely by ear.

LESSON SPECS

• Challenges: Learn by doing! Complete challenges by programming patches with Syntorial’s built-in synth.

• Videos: Everything is taught through video demonstrations using the same synth that you’ll use in the challenges.

• Patches: Program, program, program. After all, that’s what it’s all about, right? By the end you will have programmed tons of patches, from simple to complex, familiar to strange.

• Quizzes: Multiple choice questions to help you retain and remember everything you learn.

• On Your Own: Syntorial will give you periodic tasks to be carried out on your own with whatever synth(s) you use.

Superb!

As an electronics research and design engineer who has an extensive understanding of audio or sonics in general, it’s never been much help in creating a sound other than choosing the right wave to build upon, the fundamental frequency. A sine wave will give a smooth tone ideal for wind instruments, the sawtooth is good for lead sounds as it literally does seem to cut through everything with its rasp harshness.
However, it’s never really helped me program authentic patches, I’ve decided it’s an art in it’s own right, and this App is by far the best tutorial I’ve ever seen. It’s brilliant, and whilst the Devs will have needed a far greater understanding of using the building blocks and exploiting harmonics whilst defying the laws of physics is a credit to them - a lot of hard work has gone into this and it’s taken me back onto the road of patch creating. Otherwise you just sound like everyone else who has the same hardware or soft-synths; everyone needs their own ‘sound’ - it’s your signature and one people will pick up on and instantly know “it’s you” playing. If that’s your goal. Other than that it’s a lot of geeky fun.
Brilliantly done, and long overdue.

Brilliant....

I got the synth bug almost a year ago, since then I’ve read books and watched countless videos and while they taught me what this and that does it never got fully across the how and why! This is hands on, Joe explains each section clearly in an easy to understand way, then sets you challenges that you have to complete that get progressively harder as you progress, then encourages you to try the same techniques on any synth you may already own. On top of Syntorial there are extras that guide you through particular synths like massive, serum and Moogs voyager and a few others. Another great feature is you can download it to your iPad and carry on away from your daw and carry on where you left off on your computer later. Great for the dinner break at work. It may be expensive, but it’s worth every penny. I just hope in the future there’s an add on for the Moog subsequent 37 wink wink, cough cough 😂

This is how you learn about synths

After the first free lessons you realise how much you learn in just those few lessons . Yes you need to pay for the whole course . It did take a Black Friday deal to tempt me . However even if I had the full price I would have still written this .
It’s invaluable if you want to master the synth . And you get a free soft synth in the bargain
