Description

Braille Institute's VisionSim (v3.0) app for iPhone and iPad was developed to allow people with healthy vision to see the world through the eyes of a person experiencing one of nine degenerative eye diseases. The eye diseases that are simulated are: age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, chronic open-angle glaucoma, corneal edema, diabetic retinopathy, homonymous hemianopia, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, retinitis pigmentosa.

The application uses the camera in the iPhone or iPad along with digital filters to allow the user to experience the symptoms of a particular disease. Using sliding touch-screen controls, the user can manipulate the severity of the symptoms. Still images from the simulations can be saved by the user and stored or shared.

(Note: iOS version 6+ users - In order to save your VisionSim 'simulator' images, you must go to SETTINGS > PRIVACY > PHOTOS > turn VisionSim 'ON')

The application also provides detailed information about each of the eye diseases including associated visual phenomenon, symptoms, causes and treatments. The user can also access Braille Institute's website or contact Braille Institute directly via email for more information.

This application was designed to foster understanding and compassion for the millions of people affected by these eye conditions.

poor implementation

Great idea, good functionalities with poor implementation that consumes device's memory. I've never faced such memory consumption from any other application!

Best Way to Illustrate a Point for Vision Impairment Advocacy

One of the hardest parts when discussing the Affects of sight loss comes when describing what it looks like to loook through the optical system of the impacted person. With this app, all one needs to do is point and gaze as the iPad's screen. Even better yet, the app allows to show how a condition progresses from minimal sight impairment to the end stages of the most common conditions. For greater affect during a presentation, one simply needs to connect the iPad into a prjector or large screen, thus enabling a much larger view of life with a condition.

Thank you very much for developing this app.

Simulator Crashes

I give credit for the informational service this app provides, but I have been very disappointed in the simulation, which has never worked after multiple attempts. In addition, the app crashed during several of those tries. I installed this app to better understand macular degeneration. Instead, I get error messages on my iPad mini saying that system memory is low on my device and that the simulator is being turned off. If this device doesn't work on all Apple devices, the product description should indicate that. Better still, I hope the developer will make the appropriate adjustments and fixes so this app can realize its full potential.
